Aluminum-and-glass doors, honestly
A house deadbolt bores through two inches of wood. A storefront door's stile β the vertical rail beside the glass β can be under two inches wide. There is nowhere to put a normal lock, so the trade built a different family of hardware. Adams Rite is the shorthand most of us still use for it.
- Narrow-stile latch β a flat deadlatch, or a hook bolt that swings out and grabs. Hook bolts go on pairs of doors, where there is no fixed jamb to throw a straight bolt into.
- Mortise cylinder β threaded, with a cam on the back. It screws in. It is not a key-in-knob cylinder and it does not swap for one.
- Door closer β the arm overhead. When it weakens the door stops latching fully, and people blame the lock for the closer's problem.
Usually it is not the lock's fault
The most common "our lock is broken" call on 98 is a door out of alignment: the building settles, the closer loses adjustment, the pivot wears, and the bolt no longer meets the strike squarely. We check the swing and the strike before selling anybody a cylinder. New hardware on a misaligned door is new hardware that also will not latch.
Master key systems, without the pitch
One key that opens everything is a real, buildable thing β with a real cost most people selling it will not mention.
What it is. Each door gets a change key that opens only that door. The owner carries a master that opens all of them. Add a level and a shift lead holds a key for the front, the stockroom and the office β but not the safe room.
What happens inside. A normal pin chamber holds two pins β bottom pin and driver β and the right key lifts the stack so the gap between them lands exactly at the shear line. To master key it we add a third pin, a thin master wafer, between them. Now that chamber has two heights that open: one for the change key, one for the master. Do that in several chambers and one cylinder legitimately accepts two keys.
The honest tradeoff
Every wafer is one more valid shear point. That slightly reduces pick resistance, and it creates extra key combinations that mathematically exist β keys nobody cut that would open a door they were never meant to. That is key-interchange risk, and it grows fast in a system improvised over years.
So: a small, deliberately designed system beats a sprawling accidental one. Six doors planned on paper before a single pin is loaded is a good system. Twenty-two doors master-keyed one at a time by three companies is a liability with a pin kit in it β rebuild it cleanly. With two or three doors, skip masterkeying: keying them alike gives you the convenience with none of the shear-line penalty.
The day someone leaves, the key is a liability
The most common commercial call in Mary Esther, and it is not close.
A key in a former employee's pocket is not a key. It is an open question. Did they hand it back? Was it the only one? Did they copy it at a kiosk on a lunch break β ninety seconds, no record at all? You cannot answer that. You can make it irrelevant.
Rekeying re-pins the cylinders you already own: every old key stops working, a new one starts, same hardware. If you are master keyed we re-cut the affected change keys and preserve the master β management's key still works, the departed employee's does not.
Do it the same day. A Friday resignation and a Wednesday rekey is five nights of an unanswered question. Same logic, different building, on our rekey page.
Exit devices and life safety β the part we will not bend on
Code requires free egress. Anyone inside must get out through a marked exit in one motion β no key, no hunting for a thumbturn. That is what a panic bar is: you push it with your body and the door opens, even though it is locked from outside.
We get asked, gently and often, to make an exit "more secure" from the inside β sometimes after a chain and padlock have already gone through a rear exit's push bars because of theft out the back. The answer is no, and the reason is arithmetic. A door people cannot get OUT of in a fire is a far worse problem than a door someone could get into. Property loss is insurable. Never chain or padlock a marked exit while the building is occupied.
What we do instead
- Fix the device β most complaints are a dogged latch, a worn strike, or a bar that no longer retracts fully. Repairable.
- Alarmed or delayed-egress hardware where occupancy and code allow, so the door still opens but nobody uses it as a silent shortcut.
- Secure the outside β proper trim, an attack-resistant cylinder, a better strike. That is the side the risk is actually on.
Access control, told straight
Keypads and fobs solve real problems. The marketing pretends they solve all of them.
What it genuinely fixes
Turnover. Delete a credential in seconds instead of re-pinning a cylinder β and get an audit trail: who opened the back door, at 6:14 on which morning.
What nobody says
A reader is only as good as the door and frame it is bolted to. An expensive reader on a bent aluminum door with a worn strike is an expensive reader on a door you can pull open.
And it needs power
Electrified hardware fails somehow β fail-safe (unlocks) or fail-secure (stays locked). Which is correct depends on whether that door is an exit. That is a life-safety decision, not a preference.
The sequence never changes: door and frame first, lock second, credential third. We will keep you on keys when keys are right, and say so when they are not.
We work around your business day
Nobody wants a cylinder drilled out at 1 p.m. on a Saturday with customers in the store. Rekeys, master key rebuilds, closers and hardware swaps get scheduled after close, before open, or on your slow day.
Emergencies are the exception β a storefront that will not lock at close, a key snapped off in the only exterior cylinder, a manager locked out before open. See emergency lockouts. Can you work on the aluminum storefront door β the glass one?
Yes. That is narrow-stile hardware: Adams Rite style deadlatches and hook bolts, mortise cylinders, and the overhead closer. Different family of hardware than anything on a house, and the most common commercial door on the Miracle Strip Parkway corridor.
Does master keying make my locks less secure?
Slightly β and anyone who says otherwise is selling. Each master wafer adds a second valid shear point, which mildly reduces pick resistance and creates extra key combinations that could cross doors. Fair trade in a small designed system; a real problem in a sprawling improvised one.
Can you padlock our back exit to stop theft?
Not during business hours. A marked exit must stay freely openable from inside. We will secure that opening another way β exterior trim, a stronger strike, an alarmed device where permitted, or access control.
Should we move to keypads and fobs?
If your problem is turnover and you want an audit trail, seriously consider it β but access control is only as strong as the door and frame it is mounted on. We fix the door first, then talk credentials.
Our door won't latch. Do we need a new lock?
Probably not. Most of the time it is alignment: the closer is out of adjustment, the pivot is worn, or the building has settled and the bolt no longer meets the strike squarely. We check the geometry before quoting parts.
